An Online Acquaintance Community: The Emergence of Chinese Virtual Civility

How is social etiquette performed when offline interpersonal interactions are mediated online? Sixty semi-structured interviews with WeChat users, China's most popular media platform, show that the app's technical designs facilitated a set of online rules which reproduced those acquaintance communities. Three dimensions were considered and observed: respect, elegance, tidiness. Users honored face others avoided causing to lose face, often presented positive but restrained self-image, strived preserve tidiness public space by avoiding sharing exposing “negative energy.” A video abstract available at https://youtu.be/2tG40y8J11E.
